The grain size gap and abrupt gravel-sand transitions in rivers due to suspension fallout

چکیده
Median grain sizes on riverbeds range from boulders in uplands to silt in lowlands; however, rivers with ~1–5mm diameter bed sediment are rare. This grain size gap also marks an abrupt transition between graveland sand-bedded reaches that is unlike any other part of the fluvial network. Abrupt gravel-sand transitions have been attributed to rapid breakdown or rapid transport of fine gravel, or a bimodal sediment supply, but supporting evidence is lacking. Here we demonstrate that rivers dramatically lose the ability to transport sand as wash load where bed shear velocity drops below ~0.1m/s, forcing an abrupt transition in bed-material grain size. Using thresholds for wash load and initial motion, we show that the gap emerges only for median bed-material grain sizes of ~1–5mm due to Reynolds number dependencies in suspension transport. The grain size gap, therefore, is sensitive to material properties and gravity, with coarser gaps predicted on Mars and Titan.

The domain of bedload sheets
Bedload sheets are low-amplitude bedforms the are formed by sorting patterns in mixed-size sediment (gravel or gravel-sand mixtures). The features have been functionally linked to dune forms developed in sandy sediments and gravel dunes formed in river channels. There have been a number of attempts to place bedload sheets on extended versions of the bedform phase diagrams used to predict sand b...
متن کاملTransient response in longitudinal grain size to reduced gravel supply in a large river
[1] The first extensive dataset on subaqueous bed material grain size in a large river subject to reduced sediment supply is investigated alongside bathymetry, modeled flow, and sediment flux. Results suggest that following sediment supply decline and a shift to a finer sediment supply, the gravel‐sand transition (GST) in fluvial systems extends and subsequently migrates upstream. The non‐abrup...
متن کاملAbrasion-set limits on Himalayan gravel flux.
Rivers sourced in the Himalayan mountain range carry some of the largest sediment loads on the planet, yet coarse gravel in these rivers vanishes within approximately 10-40 kilometres on entering the Ganga Plain (the part of the North Indian River Plain containing the Ganges River). Understanding the fate of gravel is important for forecasting the response of rivers to large influxes of sedimen...
متن کاملCosmogenic Be as a tracer for hillslope and channel sediment dynamics in the Clearwater River, western Washington State
We use the Be concentration in alluvial sand and gravel to document hillslope exposure history and trace the reduction in grain size of river alluvium in the Clearwater River basin, western Washington State. Clearwater tributary basins Wilson Creek (WC, 6 km) and East Fork Miller Creek (EFMC, 12 km) were each sampled in headwater and downstream sites for Be in alluvial sand (0.25–0.50 mm) and g...
متن کاملLate Pleistocene and early Holocene rivers and wetlands in the Bonneville basin of western North America
Field investigations at Dugway Proving Ground in western Utah have produced new data on the chronology and human occupation of late Pleistocene and early Holocene lakes, rivers, and wetlands in the Lake Bonneville basin. We have classified paleo-river channels of these ages as “gravel channels” and “sand channels.” Gravel channels are straight to curved, digitate, and have abrupt bulbous ends. ...
